What is a Data Matrix Code?
A Data Matrix code is a high-density, two-dimensional (2D) barcode that can store large amounts of data (text or numeric) in a small space. It looks like a square or rectangular pattern of small black and white dots, and it often has a solid border on two adjacent sides, forming an "L" shape, which helps the scanner locate and orient the code.
Unlike a simple linear barcode, a Data Matrix code can typically store more information and has built-in error correction, making it very reliable even if partially damaged.
How to Scan and Add a Data Matrix Code
The Papertrail mobile app's built-in scanner is now optimised to read Data Matrix codes and extract the relevant data.
This process allows you to quickly add to a record using your device's camera to scan a data matrix (2D barcode).
Step-by-Step Instructions
Navigate to the specific record you wish to modify.
Select Add/View More details.
Tap the + symbol in the top-right corner of the screen.
Select Serial, Identifier or Barcode from the list of options.
Tap the Barcode Icon. This will activate your device's camera view.
Use the camera view to scan the data matrix on the item.
The serial number will automatically be added to the record.
Searching for an item using Data Matrix codes
Once a data matrix code has been added to a record, you can use the search function on the Papertrail dashboard to quickly navigate to that record.
Navigate to your dashboard.
Select the Search (magnifying glass) icon
Select Barcode.
Scan the code using your device's camera
The app will then take you directly to the corresponding record.
